On 9 October 2015, the Council of the European Union reached a General Approach on the Proposal for a Directive on protecting personal data processed for the purpose of law enforcement (full text here).
Another milestone in the process of approving the Data Protection Reform as the Reform is, in fact, a legislative PACKAGE that includes two legislative proposals:
– General data protection Regulation (a General Approach was approved on 15 june 2015, the first trilogue meeting on 24 june 2015)
– Directive on protecting personal data processed for the purpose of law enforcement
Now the Council has a political agreement also on the Directive on the basis of which it can now begin negotiations (trilogue) with the European Parliament.
It is important to remember that on 15 june the incoming Luxembourg Presidency (during the press conference followed the approving of a General Approach on the Regulation) indicated that “works on the data protection directive in the law enforcement area would be accelerated with the aim to find a general approach in October“, so, what to say… goal achieved!
